The boogie down bronx

DJ Kool Herc

DJ Kool Herc immigrated to the US from Jamaica, making Bronx, NY his home. Here, he was exposed to a variety of musical genres, including soul, rock, funk, reggae, and dancehall. This exposure led him to listen closely to the beats of the drums in the music he studied. He had a connection to music that gave him the ability to create what is now known as Hip Hop. He used the beats from all the genres he was exposed to and mixed them in a way to get the party started! His mission was always to give life to music in a way that others could enjoy, and he succeeded in doing that and much more.

His first time introducing his music to the world was in 1973 when he was the DJ for his little sister's back-to-school party. Soon after he began mixing beats, rapper Coke La Rock was the first to jump on a track and rap to Hip Hop. It was in 1974 when DJ Pleaser Lovebug Starski first titled DJ Kool Herc’s music as Hip Hop. From then on, Hip Hop sounds have carried through history to shape not only Black culture and style but also music to this day.

Honoring hip hop today

Hip Hop has come a long way since DJ Herc started the movement. In fact, I would argue that there are some people working to protect what it has become, and Kendrick Lamar is one of those people. When J. Cole dropped out of the beef, there was backlash from his fan base because they thought he was backing down, but in reality, Kendrick is fire without the beef. It’s also easy to argue that he is likely one of the best rappers in the game today. True to his love for being a true lyricist and beat maker, Kendrick carries on the love for music that the ones before him did. The same can be said about rappers such as Common, Kanye West, J. Cole, and many more who fall under the genre of hip hop.
